Coronado Island
We took advantage of an open October weekend to plan a quick getaway for just the 2 of us. We have been to San Diego a few times before so decided to try something new and stay on Coronado Island. It was a great choice- the island offered the relaxing beach-style getaway we were hoping for!
Hotel options are a little more limited than downtown- we settled on the Coronado Island Marriott which is on the bayside and it was excellent! The hotel never felt crowded even though they were hosting a convention. Rooms are spacious and spread out with huge patios. The pool area is very nice, right on the water with poolside service.
Our room package included breakfast which was a very nice buffet. Fruit-infused water is available in the lobby all day. There's a very nice fitness center including tennis courts and complimentary bike rentals. We opted for a bike rental- 2 hours are free, (it's $10/hr over that). All bikes are cruisers and come with a basket and lock. We grabbed our bikes and headed out onto the bike path that would take us around the island to the beach side. It's just under 2 miles to the Del Coronado which is right on the beachfront. It's an easy ride- bike lanes all the way, ocean and golf views for most of the ride. Once we got there, we parked our bikes and locked them up and went to explore the hotel. The Hotel Del Coronado dates back to the late 1800s. It's beautiful to see but definitely very busy and crowded- we had originally considered staying here but once we visited we were very happy with our much more laid-back choice. It's definitely worth a visit though, especially if you want some beach time.
